Handsome Ghost Interview
May 21st was one of my favorite days in the short existence of Sonically Awkward. That day featured Handsome Ghost, led by Tim Noyes, playing my favorite venue in Portland - the Doug Fir Lounge. As if that wasn't enough, after the show we got a chance to sit down in person with Tim and chat for about 15 minutes.
Handsome Ghost hit Portland on their first ever headlining tour fresh off the release of the hit single 'beauty / bends:' - which has been featured on SA as a previous Song of the Week winner. The single marked the first piece of new music since their EP (The Brilliant Glow). According to Tim, it was conjured up in written form in a hotel parking lot as an "apology song to someone close - not a 'take me back' sort of thing, but realizing that, yea, I messed that up."
When I asked him early on in the interview about the name of the band, Tim brought up that initially he used massive filters on his voice while recording - think Francis & The Lights or Bon Iver. When asked why that doesn't make an appearance in his music, at least in that drastic way that those 2 artists use it as of late, he acknowledged; "The heavy effects I like a lot, but it's not necessarily for everyone. I think for this kind of music I kinda feel it was taking away a little bit from the intimacy of the lyrics." It will be interesting to see on the debut album from Handsome Ghost, which you can expect early fall 2017, if there will be more effects added throughout or not. If I had to guess what 'early fall' means release-wise, I'd venture to say anywhere from August 4 - October 13. Just a guess!
When asked specifically about the debut record, there isn't much that is finalized - which makes total sense. When asked about the album, he said; "I'm picking the songs that meant the most to me, and hoping people will connect with the whole album." Tim also said that all the songs on the album will be written by him and performed with the band, meaning no collabs this time around. I asked him how he felt about being so close to having the debut album finalized; "I'm happy. I know where I was when I wrote all the songs, I know who they're about - It's going to be very personal. At the very least I'll be proud of it."
The rest of 2017 is going to be pretty busy for Tim Noyes and Handsome Ghost. They have a couple more weeks on tour before they take a short, much needed break before finalizing the album in the summer months. The rest of the year includes 2 big festival performances - at Fire Fly Festival, and Billboards' Hot 100 in NY. Tim confirmed they're planning on a tour again in the fall, likely in support of the album. Thankfully we won't have to wait very long for more stuff from Handsome Ghost. Thank you Tim for your time, coffee on me next time you're in town.
Listen to the entire interview with Tim here - even if it was recorded in the Doug Fir Lounge, the clarity is fantastic - enjoy!
