Morgan Saint - 9/20/17 - Crystal Ballroom
It's rare for an artist with just a single track out on the major streaming services to get me as amped-up as I was for this show at the Crystal Ballroom last week. Morgan Saint is not an ordinary artist, though. The single that was available at the time of the show (and still as of today is the only one out there) was 'You', a song that I featured as Song of the Week last week. It is a beautiful, dream of a track that I recommend you listen to immediately via the links at the bottom of this post.
This was my first ever concert at the Crystal Ballroom that I was shooting myself, and the first walk down that long barrier separating the 21+ crowd and the others was pretty intimidating. As soon as Morgan came on stage, I was happy I did it, because not only did I get a front row view of one of her first ever live shows, the acoustics were absolutely perfect right there in front of her. She started off with 'You', the aforementioned track, and I was a bit surprised at this due to it being her only known song, but I didn't complain. She was accompanied on stage by a drummer and a guitarist, adding that crispness to her percussion that is so important at a live show.
As Morgan proceeded throughout her set, all the other songs were unknown to me and those in the crowd. At the time, I had heard rumors that she was about to announce her debut EP, and that has indeed happened - it is slated for release on October 13! I got an advance copy, which you can expect to see a review on prior to that releasing. The set as a whole was smooth, without the crowd interaction of, say, Liz Longley or Amy Shark, but those two have also been at their craft a lot longer than Morgan has. The set included rattling bass, Lorde-esque moves on stage, and chorus' that I can not wait to hear the studio recorded version of. As I was shooting and taking in the show, it brought many flashbacks to mind - most prominent being of Marian Hill, Kacy Hill, and VERITE's live shows. The light, bass-driven electro-pop sound melded perfectly with her feathery, dreamy voice layered on top all added up to give the crowd a treat that they weren't expecting. I am more than excited to cover the rise of this special artist - stay tuned for the EP review, interview, and more!
