New Artist Alert - Tei Shi
Our latest New Artist Alert on Sonically Awkward spotlights the Argentinian born and now Brooklyn based artist Tei Shi! Her full name is Valerie Teicher, and has one of the most unique sounds in the indie-pop realm that has come out in awhile. I've heard her music be compared to Prince (yes, that Prince), Blood Orange, and my personal comparison would be to that of FKA twigs.
She has moved around a lot in her short life to this point, having grown up in Argentina, and since then has spent time in; Colombia, Vancouver (BC), and Boston, where she attended Berklee College of Music, the same school as Sonically Awkward favorite Joe Hicks. She has since settled down in Brooklyn around 2013, when her first single 'M&M's' released to make a massive impact around smaller music blogs and helped her compile a large starting fan base.
Since that track was released, she's dropped an EP (Saudade), and has worked with names like Glass Animals and Shy Girls before releasing her second EP (Verde) in 2015. The lead single amassed millions of streams online within weeks, and officially marked the beginning of her discovery by bigger blogs and radio hosts around the world. Valerie released her debut album on Downtown Records in March 2017, titled Crawl Space - which also received critical acclaim for her lack of genre definition, instead paving her own path, capitalizing on her unique, fascinating vocals.
She is coming to Portland June 16 at Holocene, and there are still tickets left if you're trying to go see one of Sonically Awkward's favorite rising new artists! You can find tickets via the button below. Thanks to Katie Nelson for helping get Sonically Awkward into the show for coverage!
