Throwback Thursday - Lorde
Music discovery can happen at literally any time, as proved in this short trip down memory lane. I was unknowingly helping my parents in 2012 create space for the wonderful hot tub that now resides at the Wausau, WI Felten residence. I was pulling weeds and shoveling dirt aside when a New Zealand singer's voice came through my headphones, and I remember stopping what I was doing and checking my phone to see who it was I was listening to. I had never heard anything like 'Royals' before. Lorde's unique mix of darkness, secrecy, lack of interest in material possessions, and genre-encompassing sound helped launch her into mainstream stardom - whether she wanted it or not. Even after 3 years without a live show, she has a gig lined up at Coachella this year, which also features Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar. That is quite the return.
She went on to release her debut album Pure Heroine in 2013, which topped US and World charts immediately. In the first 'Throwback Thursday' post for Sonically Awkward, let's reminisce and bring some attention back to Lorde, as rumor has it she will be making a return musically in 2017. You can find 'Royals', and my personal favorites '400 Lux' & 'Team' on Pure Heroine below. Try to remember where you were when you first heard her terrific tunes!
