Felten Faves - October 2017

October was a bit of an odd month for Sonically Awkward. As some of you may know, I have a 'real' full-time job on top of running SA, and that job was absolutely nuts during October. I had to miss a couple shows I would've loved to attend, but I'm not bitter. It was a refreshing, sort of relaxing break from the constant, several-shows-per-week coverage. I was still able to catch Billie Eilish and Mikey Mike during October, two of my favorite upcoming artists to keep an eye on in the future. Morgan Saint's EP 17 Hero came out, and my buddy Joe Hicks and I got to catch up on the phone for another fantastic hour-long conversation. There was a ton of great music released in October, and I'll try and highlight my top tracks below. Enjoy!

The Felten Faves list begins with my favorite 'mixtape' released in October from OVO's Belly, with the amazing song 'Mumble Rap' (title track) being included here. Belly has been a bit of a hit or miss in his past couple releases, but the entire Mumble Rap tape showcases his lyricism and ear for trap-infused beats, all over his voice that seems to have grown in terms of listen-ability as his career moves along. Say what you will about NBA stars, or any professional athlete for that matter, taking a stab at making music, but with Dame D.O.L.L.A.'s CONFIRMED, the second album from Portland Trailblazers star Damian Lillard, he took a massive step forward. I featured 'Run It Up' in September, and this month with the release of the album comes 'Anomaly', which features 2 Chainz. Tash Sultana, just one of SA's favorite acts emerging from down under (Australia), also makes an appearance on the list for October with her surf-rock track 'Mystik'.

As mentioned above, Morgan Saint's 17 Hero was released in October (check out my review here), and my favorite track 'New Regime' makes the list. Rex Orange County surprised his fans with a brand new single as well, titled 'Loving Is Easy'. He goes on an introspective journey of love, and brings Benny Sings on the track for support. Lo Moon is a band that I've been keeping an eye on ever since 'Loveless' was featured on Apple Music several months ago. They've been touring in support of acts like London Grammar and others all around the world, with just a couple singles out. 'Thorns' is their third release, and is as beautiful as a thorn is prickly. Post Malone's 'Candy Paint' is maybe not as catchy as the insanely massive hit 'rockstar', but is extremely listenable and fans of Post will no doubt have already added this one to their playlists.

Another artist releasing a bunch of singles recently in advance of his upcoming project is blackbear. His track 'bright pink tims' (ft. Cam'ron) makes the list for the versatility blackbear shows rapping, and having Cam'ron on a track is not ever a bad thing. Weezer's new album Pacific Daydream released at the end of October, and 'Happy Hour' is a must-hear from that record. Steve Angello utilized Pusha T on the loud, aggressive track 'Freedom', a track once more showing how adaptive Pusha is on any and all kind of beats. Dagny, who was just in Portland in support of LANY at the Crystal Ballrom, released new single 'Love You Like That', the most pop song on the list, but no regrets. I have found myself on numerous occasions screaming out the chorus while cruising the roads of Oregon. And last but certainly not least, an artist that I just discovered for myself in October is Yellow Days. His new project came out at the end of October as well, and 'Nothing's Going to Keep Me Down' was an instant add to the top songs of the month. Think of a mix between Rex Orange County, Jacob Banks, and Leon Bridges. I'm a big fan.

Felten Faves - September 2017

September 2017 will be remembered mainly for the incredible weather those of us in Portland enjoyed, as we seemingly have passed the monotonous, steady 90+ degree days, as well as no longer having to hold our breaths as we walk outside amidst raining ash. We had some rain, some sun, and some fantastic new music was released this past month as well. September didn't come and go without taking its toll - nearly everyone I know came down with some type of flu or cold, myself included. I even got an ear infection on top of that, cheers to modern medicine, vinyl, and yoga, all helping to relieve some of the accumulated stress from the month.

Favorite pic of September? Most likely. VÉRITE at Doug Fir - Pic by Hans

The Felten Faves list for September is a bit short in comparison to some previous months, for the aformentioned sickness reason, as well as there being a ton of good full-length albums being released. For example - I can't put the entirety of Tori Amos' beautiful, hypnotizing record on this list, and it doesn't seem to do justice to take any given song out of that wonderfully built album, going from song to song like water down a stream. The majority of the tracks on here are in fact hip-hop and rap heavy, so if that's not your cup of coffee(or tea), feel free to skip out on this one and check out previous months' lists that are heavier on the alt-rock side, for instance.

The month started off with a bang when G-Eazy, not normally one of my featured artists, teamed up with A$AP Rocky and the woman who single-handed has broken Billboard's record for a #1 song by a solo female, Cardi B ('Bodak Yellow') on 'No Limit'. U2 released a gem early in the month, and Jack Johnson's latest record featured a ton of surf-rock jams, with my personal fave being the funky 'Gather'. The Cool Kids aren't new by any means, as they've been making hits for over a decade. 'Too Smooth' features tons of bass and a fun, catchy chorus that will have your car rattling as you're singing along.

Minneapolis' Lizzo, by way of Houston, has been on fire recently. Her latest single 'Truth Hurts' is no exception. How could I forget Post Malone and 21 Savage's 'rockstar'? I didn't. The song that went platinum faster than any other on streaming services is a much deserved addition to the list, and is as great of a song as any released in September. Dame D.O.L.L.A.'s debut record last year, to me anyway, was a bit overrated. This latest release though is quite good. 'Run It Up' features Lil Wayne at his best over a beat that goes harder than Dame in the paint. You'll want to add this to your gym and running playlists right away. Hoodie Allen, Wale, Ty Dolla $ign, and BORNS round out the list for September!

Felten Faves - August 2017

If you have been following Sonically Awkward this past month, you'll know that August was a busy one. It featured the first Contributor Series on SA, focusing on each Contributor's unique taste in music, and consisted of each person's take on a 'Songs of Summer' playlist. There was an extended vacation to the Cayman Islands, which was a much needed reset on the brain. I have gotten back into the habit of reading on a daily basis, and have experienced a much more relaxed state of mind thanks to that. August also featured tons of great releases. Let's dive in a little more closely as to what made the month of August's top songs exactly that.

Mt. Hood from Larch Mountain - August 2017

Mt. Hood from Larch Mountain - August 2017

First up on the list for August is Buddy's single 'That Much'. This is an artist SA has been a fan of since his debut single 'Shine', which was produced by Pharrell. His smooth delivery, easy to hear lyrics, and incredible beat selection are what will keep him in the forefront of the up-and-coming hip-hop scene. Another name in this realm is Jazz Cartier, whose song 'Nobody's Watching' also makes the August list. Minneapolis' own Lizzo, by way of Houston, released 'Water Me' at the end of August, and is a perfect jam for the end of summer parties that are starting to come up. I had to include a track from Billie Eilish's debut EP, and 'idontwannabeyouanymore' is just that. She is an artist making a definitive mark on the music scene right now, regardless of what her age may tell you.

Say what you will about Taylor Swift - I've been a hater myself in the past for the over the top pop and country tones that just don't click for me. When I saw she put out a new track, it was played with apprehension. Then the drums kicked in. This is nothing like the Taylor that we know from Red or even 1989. This is a defining, course-altering song for the former country star. Juicy J, who is still riding the late career rollercoaster, partnered with Offset of Migos on 'Flood Watch', a piano-driven hip-hop track. POWERS' 'Just Kids' is a perfect summer jam, production that lifts you up, as Panama would say. The list also features tracks from Dirty Projectors, Anna of the North, Dominique, Tori Amos, The War on Drugs, and more.

Felten Faves - July 2017

If June 2017 was the most challenging month so far in Portland, July was a close 2nd thanks to the busy-ness factor. I hosted my good friend and contributor Brady for 2 weeks, and my childhood friend Jeff for another week visit. The website content didn't slow down, and I appreciate both of those guys for allowing me to do my thing when they were visiting. July also saw the temperatures really ramp up - mother nature must've heard all the angry Portlanders complaining about the cold weather in June.

Jeffro and myself in the Gorge - July 2017

Jeffro and myself in the Gorge - July 2017

This past month featured tons of great releases. Lana Del Rey concocted yet another beautifully crafted song showing not all summer tunes need to be uplifting or poppy. Kesha's first single in years came out in July, and the ballad was a perfect step back into the water that is the music industry. Billie Eilish, who SA can not get enough of, has 2 features here, with both 'COPYCAT' & 'my boy' making the cut. Depending who you ask, Cardi B may have already locked up the song of the summer weeks ago. 'Bodak Yellow' made the list easily. Portland's own Amine released his debut album, and when he fan girled because Nelly was in the studio next to him, 'Yellow' was born. Tyler, The Creator's anticipated record also dropped, and he drew from another SA favorite Rex Orange County and Anna of the North for 'Boredom'.

Stay tuned for Sonically Awkward's first Contributor series - Songs of Summer 2017. Each are working on a specific playlist and write up on their take on a summer playlist - and as we know, each contributor has their own unique tastes. I'm very excited to share these with you - follow @SonicallyAwk on Twitter to make sure you don't miss any of the content to come!

Felten Faves - June 2017

June 2017 featured some of my best days of 2017, and some of my worst. It was a month full of ups and downs, cold, rainy days, and beautiful, sunny Oregon summer days. It was unpredictable, a bit unstable, tough, and incredibly fun as well. I hosted my family for a week. We went hiking, I brought them to a concert, I had my dad shoot that show alongside me. I took lots of naps in anticipation of a crazy, hectic rest of summer 2017. This playlist came together slowly, but the range of sounds fits perfectly.

The playlist features tracks perfect for summer - thanks to Mother Nature for Portland's arrival of summer, by the way! Better late than never. The list also features booming, futuristic bass courtesy of Vince Staples' brand new Big Fish Theory, electro-pop from Sonically Awkward favorite VÉRITÉ, and 3 songs in one from Portland's own Aminé ('Turf'). Allie X makes her debut on a Felten Faves playlist with her unique take on pop music, and Handsome Ghost makes his return with brand new alternative folk-pop track 'Better Off' - a song about moving on and getting over someone - check out the Song of the Week post here. Action Bronson, 6LACK, Towkio and Lil Yachty bring the rap flair that is mandatory for any summer playlist, all as unique and refreshing as the next.

I am excited to see what the July playlist holds as life moves along and new things and people are introduced into my life. For those who are unfamiliar - Sonically Awkward is nearing ever closer to 500 twitter followers (446 as of July 4 at noon) - and when we do hit 500, there will be a giveaway, so you're going to want to make sure you're following SA at @SonicallyAwk asap!

Felten Faves - 4th Edition - August 2016

August 2016 was a wildly fun month for me as I was finally finding my place in Portland. It also included a 10 day vacation with my family and Sonically Awkward Contributors Conrad Felten and bradley p. Life was pretty easy during August 2016.

Jacob Banks - Doug Fir - Pic by Dave Franz

Jacob Banks - Doug Fir - Pic by Dave Franz

As evidenced in the playlist that I grew to love over this month, it features mainly summer themed jams, and it also was my introduction to Jacob Banks - as evidenced by not 1, not 2, but 3 of his tracks off 2015's The Paradox. Chance The Rapper's 'No Problem' was reaching its fever pitch, with every single radio station from Portland OR to Portland ME playing it on the hour. KUNGS' 'This Girl' featured the dance heavy production and brass that was missing in my life at the time.

Frank Ocean's 'Blonde' - August 20, 2016

Frank Ocean's 'Blonde' - August 20, 2016

As anyone who knows me can attest to, I've been a fan of Mac Miller for awhile. He's gone through lots of changes both sonically and as a person since I first discovered him in High School, but his release of 'Dang!' with Anderson .Paak completely blew my mind. Saint Motel's 'Move' was another one that was released with perfect timing during the summer. And I haven't even mentioned Frank Ocean's return to the scene with his album Blonde on August 20.

There's so much more that I will let you discover for yourself - or, if you're like me and a music snob, this list should bring a sense of nostalgia to your ear holes. Those of us in Portland aren't really sure what season we're in. Where you at, summer? This playlist disregards seasons, and I hope you enjoy it!

Felten Faves - May 2017

May 2017 may not have featured the expected arrival of summer in Portland, but it did include a ton of highlights for Sonically Awkward. I was able to snag an in-person interview with Tim Noyes, lead of Handsome Ghost after his show at the Doug Fir. At the end of May, SA was approved for not one, but 2 media passes to cover Sasquatch 2017. The site is starting to pick up big time followers and return visitors. Connections are being made, and things are busy as hell.

An old abandoned rest station just across the river into Washington on the way to Sasquatch, 2017

This month's Felten Faves playlist features a ton of summer-themed tracks, some sentimental tracks, and some that applied way too literally to my own personal life in this past month. POWERS, Wrabel, Ella Vos and Troye Sivan all pumped out summer tracks that feature slick production on top of heavenly vocals. Muse brings in the loud rock and roll, and Sente's 'Toothless' features the most experimental pop sound of the playlist. There are a couple hip hop tracks that are going to be on repeat all summer from Big Boi, Killer Mike, and Buddy. WATERS makes their return to the Felten Faves playlist with 'Hypocritical', and Leven Kali's 'Smile' is the jazzy track you didn't know you were missing in your life.

June has already featured it's shares of ups and downs. My family is coming to visit in a week. I'm still working through the last 5+ interviews from Sasquatch, and working on securing more festival coverage for the site. Things are looking up for Sonically Awkward - thanks for continuously checking in. As always - let me know your favorites in the comments, and enjoy this playlist!

Felten Faves - April 2017

April featured the fastest, and most obvious growth of Sonically Awkward yet. It's not saying much, as SA has been in commission now for just 3 months, but the sheer amount of concerts, interviews, and other things going on for me has taken off in the best way possible. My calendar has gone from being hard to find any upcoming events going on to being nearly impossible to find a free night off.

This month's playlist showcases a wide array of tracks, from the slow, 80's style 'On the Level' (Mac DeMarco), to one of Sonically Awkward's favorite new artists Jessie Reyez's 'Blue Ribbon'. It would've been impossible to leave Kendrick Lamar ('ELEMENT.') off the list, as well as Phoenix's new track 'J-Boy' after an extended amount of time off the radar for both. The new artists on this list you will most likely be unfamiliar with are Cousin Stizz ('Headlock'), Childhood ('Californian Light'), Knox Fortune ('Help Myself'), and Her ('Swim').

Felten Faves - 3rd Edition - July 2016

July 2016 was my third month in the beautiful city of Portland, and summer was in full swing. The apartment finally started to feel lived in, and not a brand new white box. I spent many, many hours on the rooftop terrace reading, grilling, and working on my subtle sun tan. Honestly, this month breezed by without many memorable occasions, but that was fine by me.

The 3rd Felten Faves playlist features almost 100% windows down, summer-themed tracks such as; 'Maybe IDK', 'My Type', and 'Dang!', arguably the song of the summer last year. There are a couple 'feeler's' on the list ('Miles Apart', 'The Sound'), and the rest are just random tracks which stood out to me in July of 2016.

As always, let me know your favorites in the comments!

Felten Faves - March 207

March 2017 was a big month for Sonically Awkward. I had several Artist interviews. Many new connections were made at live shows, and via twitter. I've never been as busy in my life, but in the best way possible.

This playlist resembles the non-stop, go-go-go feeling in a sense, with some fast-paced hip-hop tracks. We also see several songs that could end up being 'Song of the Summer nominees' ('Slide', 'REDMERCEDES', 'Feel It Still'). And for the days where I just took a break for mental sanity, I included a couple slow, scintillating tracks that will be best enjoyed when relaxing yourself.

Enjoy the latest Felten Faves Playlist now, and as always let me know what you loved/hated in the comments!
