New Music Friday - 2/23
These days new music comes out at a feverish, insatiable pace. My aim is to help pick some gems out of the vast amount of music that gets put out each and every week, and help funnel them into your ear canals. You can use it to help dig deeper into the artists you like, or just stick with my playlists - that's all up to you.
The album/EP list this week kicks off an album I've been waiting anxiously for for ages seemingly - the debut, self-titled album from Lo Moon! It is trance-inducing, beautiful as anything out there today, and perfectly arranged start-finish. Next is the new artist Cautious Clay, who you may know from single 'Cold War' - but that is far from all that he has to offer us. His unique, soul-filled r&b/pop is a breath of fresh air. Towkio has had an interesting week - he 'dropped' his album from space on Wednesday, quite literally. He has dominated the marketing sphere surrounding WWW. which features names like Vic Mensa, NJOMZA, SZA, and others. Last up is an SA favorite for her tranquil, peaceful soundscapes - Charlotte Day Wilson. Her EP Stone Woman is wonderful, and a must-hear for anyone who has enjoyed her previous work.
For singles this week the big name is there with 'Psycho' from Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign, who can't miss recently. Bazzi's latest single 'Gone' is another fantastic pop jam, and the incredible Janelle Monáe is back with 2 brand new tracks 'Make Me Feel' & 'Django Jane' - both as beautiful and socially conscious as they are impeccably produced. Logic is back on the new music scene with single '44 More', produced with his long-time producer 6ix, and the beat is bonkers. Flatbush Zombies are also back with 'Headstone'.
On the new artist/band front, The Night Game has released 'Bad Girls Don't Cry', a very Justin Timberlake-like pop song, and is wonderful. isaac gracie, who I know nothing about, put out 'Last Words', an absolutely beautiful, heartfelt song that every single person needs to hear. The Aces' 'Lovin is Bible' is a fun, catchy jam, and FOOL put out a great alternative track in 'Strapped'.
In the bonus section we have 2 mixes - the first an acoustic rendition of James Bay's latest single 'Wild Love', which for those who thought the original version was too 'out there', you'll be happy to hear this one feels a lot more like the 'Let It Go' era of James. I, personally, love his progression and can't wait to hear more. Next is SA favorite VÉRITÉ, with a remix courtesy of LCAW on her song 'Nothing'.
