These days new music comes out at a feverish, insatiable pace. My aim is to help pick some gems out of the vast amount of music that gets put out each and every week, and help funnel them into your ear canals. You can use it to help dig deeper into the artists you like, or just stick with my playlists - that's all up to you.
The album/EP list this week kicks off with Logic's Bobby Tarantino II, an exquisite return from the Maryland MC who can rap over any and every beat out there. This project features 2 Chainz, Big Sean, among others, but the real standout is the overall skill of Logic. He even recruited Rick and Morty for the intro - I mean come on. This is wonderful. Next up is the new solo record from David Byrne (of Talking Heads) titled American Utopia, and has garnered high praise from outlets ranging from NPR to Pitchfork, and with good reason. The way he is able to write, in combination with production that you can't stop yourself from getting lost in, is evident especially on tracks 'Everybody's Coming To My House' and 'I Dance Like This.' Third on the list this week is the self-titled album from The Neighbourhood - did you think that they couldn't release a better record than their previous 2 (I Love You (2013) and Wiped Out! (2015)) albums? They just may have done it, with a top-bottom record worthy of any and all record collection out there. It is going to be one of my next purchases, I can promise you that. Last up this week is a fantastic record from Young Fathers, titled Cocoa Sugar. If the album title doesn't real you in looking for answers, then the album art will. This trio makes songs that have influences from hip-hop, psych-rock, alternative, and even gospel. Their songs 'Turn' and 'Holy Ghost' need to be listened to, and if you've ever found yourself enjoying some Beastie Boys - you'll find a similar comfort in the cocoon of this album. Headsup - for Logic's album, I included the intro, and 3 songs - enjoy!
For singles this week, it has been hard to avoid the new Anderson .Paak song the past couple days - and that is amazing. This song was used in Apple's latest HomePod commercial, and ''Til It's Over' is a new sound from Anderson, one that I, personally, hope we see more of going forward. James Bay's second single ('Wild Love') 'Pink Lemonade' is fantastic, and I should mention that Lil Yachty did release an album today - my favorite being 'Oops' featuring 2 Chainz and K$upreme. In a bit of a mix-up sonically, Beach House's 'Dive' is a mesmerizing piece of alt-rock I can't get enough of.
On the new artist/band realm, Buddy tagged A$AP Ferg on his latest single 'Black', the perfect feature for the incredible, bass-filled track. Sango got Smino on new track 'Khlorine', and Elohim featured Yoshi Flower on 'Panic Attack, a slowed-down single from Elohim compared to some of the past releases. Parquet Courts' latest single 'Wide Awake' is groovy, catchy, and needs to be heard by each of you. In another straight week featuring a latin urban track, 'Bipolar' (Chris Jeday, Ozuna & Brytiago) is a track I may not be able to translate personally, but sonically this song is beautiful.
In the bonus track section, first up is the remix of 'Supercut' by Lorde featuring Run The Jewels, adding a darker, almost haunting side to it that is more like Lorde's early discography rather than her latest record. Another remix is on the bonus list from Billie Eilish, with TroyBoi getting a stab at 'My Boy', and REMMI's 'Minimum Wage' also sneaks onto the list!
