New Music Friday - 4/6

These days new music comes out at a feverish, insatiable pace. My aim is to help pick some gems out of the vast amount of music that gets put out each and every week, and help funnel them into your ear canals. You can use it to help dig deeper into the artists you like, or just stick with my playlists - that's all up to you.

This week is completely packed with new releases, so you'll find plenty of bonus tracks - I hope that's alright!

The album/EP list this week begins with what may very well go down as my favorite album of 2018 - Tom Misch's Geography. 'Lost In Paris' was just named the latest Song of the Week, and the next selection may well be also from Geography. Allow his funky fusion of jazz/hip-hop simmer under your pleasure receptors, and guide you home in the purest way possible. 'Cos I Love You', 'You're On My Mind', and 'Disco Yes' are a couple tracks that are must-hear, but please listen to EVERYTHING. Enjoy my friends. I was not expecting to feature Cardi B's debut Invasion of Privacy, but dang. She snaps from the onset, calling out haters, laying out her plan for her career (making bangers only), and she backs it up. What a record. Make sure you catch her intro 'Get Up 10' and 'Bickenhead'. Alina Baraz's latest record The Color of You also is a must-hear, with tracks 'I Don't Even Know Why Though' and 'Fallin' sticking out massively. Kali Uchis' Isolation is a r&b/soul masterpiece, with track 'Just a Stranger' (ft. Steve Lacy) being a great one to check out.

Due to the insane amount of great releases in project form, there is even more to dive into. Chicago's Saba released new album CARE FOR ME, which features Chance The Rapper, and beats that are more subdued and in control, leaning towards r&b more than trap. 'Girl Group' The Aces released When My Heart Felt Volcanic today, and I put that in air quotes due to the fact that term gets tossed around too lightly when a band is all women. They make incredibly catchy pop music revolving around themes ranging from heartbreak to love, let's just appreciate them for being great musicians, shall we? Alison Wonderland's album Awake is full of bonkers beats that you can run to, work out to, party to, and just lay back and groove to. Check out 'Here 4 U' and 'Cry' (ft. Buddy), I've added more than just those 2 to the list as well, since I am in love with this record. Last up is the banging hip-hop album from Flatbush Zombies! Check out 'HELL-O' and 'Crown' (ft. Portugal. The Man).

For singles this week, Portland's own Aminé is back with a new music video and single 'Campfire', with a beat that bangs deep in your chest, with a great feature from Injury Reserve. John Legend teamed up with BloodPop on 'A Good Night', a stellar pop track with John singing about the moment you meet someone and can tell they're going to be a special person in your life - it's magnificient. Sabrina Claudio released two tracks this week, both gorgeously crafted, 'All to You', and 'Don't Let Me Down', which features Khalid. Pharrell once more is on the NMF list, this time on Slim Jxmmi's 'Chanel', and Belly is back with NAV on 'Maintain'. We can't forget the newest A$AP Rocky track either! 'A$AP Forever' is a groovy jam, with assistance from Moby.

In the realm of smaller known bands/artists, lets begin with the r&b crooner Gallant, who you know from hit single 'Weight In Gold', who released brand new single 'Gentleman', marking his return to the music scene for the first time since 2016. Tove Stryke is back with new single 'On the Low', a great bubbly, slow-building track that begs to explode in a poppy chorus, but restrains itself and allows itself to focus on the words behind the track. Canadian band Arkells' new song 'People's Champ', and ODIE's track 'Northface' also made the list.

In the bonus track section, let's begin with the extremely unexpected 'Bennie and the Jets' (2018 Version) from Elton John, P!nk & Logic! What a fun and modern take on the classic song. The second bonus track is a remix on SG Lewis' 'Coming Up' by Pat Lok!
