These days new music comes out at a feverish, insatiable pace. My aim is to help pick some gems out of the vast amount of music that gets put out each and every week, and help funnel them into your ear canals. You can use it to help dig deeper into the artists you like, or just stick with my playlists - that's all up to you.
The album/EP list this week starts with the triumphant return of J. Cole! KOD was a bit of a surprise, with next to no info being available on the release as of last week. The 12-track record is full of socially conscious, government-aimed, tax-bracket bars, all over beats that are near perfection. This record has many layers, meant to be dissected at your own pace and per your own interpretation. Next up is the debut project from Virginia's Rozwell Fitzroy! Zeus I.S V.1 is a 7-track compilation of hip-hop, soul, and even a bit of funk. This man is incredibly talented. Check out '100 Grand', and 'Block Game' at the very least. The third album to check out is Vide Noir from Lord Huron. This record is another spectacular top-bottom release from the alt-folk band, with tracks like 'Secret of Life', 'When the Night is Over' and 'Wait by the River' being standouts. Last up is hugely talented songwriter/artist Sasha Sloan! She's helped write a lot of your favorite pop songs, and now she's put out her own EP - sad girl. The EP is beautifully written, tapping into sadness in an upbeat way, as the production begs you up the imaginary hill of sadness, and the lyrics gently press you back down. This is a fantastic EP. Check out 'Normal', 'Runaway' and, heck all of them.
For singles this week, Billie Eilish is back, this week with Khalid on 'lovely', produced by Billie's brother, Finneas! This is a slow-burner, focusing on both Billie and Khalid's vocals. It is 4/20 after all, and the king of stoney-rap Wiz Khalifa released '420 Freestyle'. Leon Bridges is back with another single off upcoming album Good Thing, 'Beyond', in which he battles the fear that he may have found 'the one' - that he may raise kids with, settle down with, etc. It's gorgeous. Khalid, Ty Dolla $ign and 6LACK team up on the very catchy 'OTW', and Janelle Monáe is back with 'I Like That'! Don't forget to check out the latest collab between Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson, 'Bad Dreams'.
On the new artist/band, let's begin with band Let's Eat Grandma's new track 'It's Not Just Me', a catchy synth-pop track. Gryffin, Quinn XCII & Daniel Wilson teamed up on 'Winnebago', a fun beat with a great cast of artists all lending their sound in their own way here. Lykke Li's 'Deep End', and VIXX's 'Scentist' (not a typo) round out the new artist area.
In the bonus track section, there is a 'new' mastered track from Prince posthumous, 'Nothing Compares 2 U' - a wonderfully fulfilling pop-track from the Minnesota legend. Also featured here is the Calvin Harris remix of Halsey's 'Alone', also adding Stefflon Don to the track.
