These days new music comes out at a feverish, insatiable pace. My aim is to help pick some gems out of the vast amount of music that gets put out each and every week, and help funnel them into your ear canals. You can use it to help dig deeper into the artists you like, or just stick with my playlists - that's all up to you.
The album/EP list this week begins with the highly anticipated Post Malone album, beerbongs & bentleys. This one has been rumored to come out for months now, but finally now at the end of April it's in our hands. Packed with features from 21 Savage, Nicki Minaj, Ty Dolla $ign and more, this record is full of club-ready beats and his crooning style of rap. Next up is the EP from Matt Maeson, The Hearse. You've likely heard huge hit 'Cringe', but that's just an intro. On The Hearse, we see Matt at his most personal, reminiscing on his past and how he was brought up in Prison Ministries - check out his background when you get a chance. I've been a fan of Elohim for awhile, due to her pop-inspired electronic jams that are perfect for gatherings, as well as when you're out on the trail getting in your run. Check out 'Half Love' and 'Hallucinating', as well as 'F*** Your Money'. Last up is the wonderful, funk-infused alternative album from Twin Shadow. I'm not quite sure how to describe the music itself - it needs to be tried and tested yourself. Check out tracks 'Saturday' (ft. HAIM), and 'Sympathy' (ft. Rainsford).
Kanye is back. Now, 'Lift Yourself' may have been filled with nonsense (poopity-scoop-oop), but let's not kid ourselves - with the beat on that one, we'll be listening back to that. With 'Ye vs. the People' (ft. T.I. as said people), we get a glimpse of what's going on inside Ye's head, as he breaks down some of his past weeks' tweets. Janelle Monáe is back on the NMF list with 'Screwed', and there are 2 brand new tracks from HONNE ('Me & You' getting production help from SA favorite Tom Misch).
On the new artist/band side this week, we kick it off with Ivy Adara's 'Currency', as well as Hana Vu ft. Satchy's new song 'Cool'. Both are completely unknown acts to me as of last week, but both put out great new tracks. Tove Stryke is back with her latest single 'Sway' (it actually came out 4/30), and we see Tove here utilizing more synths to make it a more fast-paced track than some of her latest releases. Mat Kearney's latest single is 'Money', which is fantastic. Let's not also forget the latest act announced to headline Doug Fir in the fall, Shallou. 'Vignette' is a slow-burning alt track, similar to eden.
In the bonus track section, it is paramount that you hear the amazing remix of Poolside's 'Feel Alright' by French producer Yuksek. This song is a perfect remix, somehow retaining the light and airy space created by Poolside, while adding a new groove that is still subdued enough to be played on a speaker next to the beach as it is to be used for homework session.
