New Music Friday - 5/11

This week, if you do nothing else, please make sure you watch Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' music video. I don't care if you skip this entire NMF post, ignore my texts, whatever - just make sure you inhale, devour, and suck up every last second of this masterpiece.

The album/EP list this week kicks off with the latest record from electro-pop duo Marian Hill, titled Unusual - and that is just what the record sounds like. Marian Hill fans will know what I mean when I say that their debut record was gorgeous to listen to - and yet, compared to other current music, fits in its own crevice unlike any other music out there. Fantastic work once again, Sam and Jeremy! Second on the list is the release of Beach House 3 (Deluxe) by Ty Dolla $ign, which features 6 brand new tracks on top of the already wonderful r&b record released earlier this year. Check out new tracks 'Pineapple' and 'Simple'. Third up is a new album from r&b/soul artist AUGUST 08 - who as of earlier today was unknown to me, but you gotta give some new artists a chance every week. This was a special treat - a mix of low intensity r&b gives way to bubbly synths on 'Missed Calls'. Check out the whole project! The last project featured here is the album from courtship., Denial in Paradise - a collection of alt-rock, with a hint of groove/electonic currents as well. Check out 'Nice Guy' especially.

For singles this week, how can I not feature the new John Mayer track? It's insanely catchy. It's groovy. The bridge makes you feel like you could float down the street. Kaskade, Brohug, Madge and Mr. Tape put out a great backyard bbq/workout track in 'Fun', and that's just what it is - don't let the paper thin lyrics hold you back from enjoying it. Wale is back with a new EP Self Promotion, and 'Salary Kaep' is a must-play.

We got to kick off with the fantastic new single from Buddy - 'Trouble on Central' - which takes us on a trip back to 90's style hip-hop. Oliver Tree's latest odd, unexplainable track is very listenable - 'Movement' gets a bit of an electronic barrage post-chorus I think you'll find enjoyable. lovelytheband, a new act to me, put out 'These Are My Friends', a very catchy alt track that will cause you to be hugely proud of your friends - you'll love this one.

In the bonus track section, KAYTRANADA lends his mixing skill to The Internet's track 'Roll (Burbank Funk)' which came out within the past couple weeks. I have loved KAYTRANADA's mixing style for a couple years now, and this does not disappoint. The second mix is by Snakehips of mega-hit 'Love Lies', by Khalid and Normani. This one adds some fun keys during the verses, and a lively summer-tinted chorus.
