Song of the Week - 'Fool' - Handsome Ghost
In anticipation of Handsome Ghost's live performance on Saturday in Portland at Holocene (you can buy tickets here), they take the Song of the Week for their 3rd time in 53 editions, this time with their song 'Fool', off last week's debut album Welcome Back! This track is the embodiment of everything that makes Handsome Ghost a can't-miss band. The stripped down, acoustic-focused production, allowing Tim Noyes' vocals to stand front and center, slowly, simmeringly detailing the extremely delicate balance between a toxic relationship, and the immense love he has for another person.
Tim sings; "You keep throwing your dishes / Funny how we make this last / You think we would've learned our lesson / Running over broken glass." Tim here is detailing, pretty plainly, fights in relationships, and how they keep revisiting the same issues, yet keep pushing on and attempting to work things out. Later on he sings; "They can't hold us down we're strong enough / If it's foolish love that we're both guilty of / Then call me a fool, call me the fool." After he gets back together with this person he's referencing, he mentions others either directly or indirectly letting him know that it is not going to work. As can be in relationships, the couple pushes through, and this is when he comes to the crux of the issue, fighting mentally over the idea that possibly the whole idea of reconnecting and attempting the relationship again is foolish. What is better to do in this situation, I imagine Tim thinking. Give the person he loves another chance, which may end up looking foolish, or end things and avoid future pain?
